Spring Coil Straw Basket

For my design I am using the flat wire that I unravel from a copper pot scrubber.

This is by far my favourite wire to use. It is a flat wire that is so easy and versatile to craft with. And the copper looks natural in rustic designs. See the Tutorial below for more detailed instructions on how to unravel the pot scrubber. And I also have a free mini workshop for you on how to patina copper- I will also link that below.

Wrap the wire around cane to secure

I like the strength weaving cane gives to the straw garland but you can also use rope or wire as a base for the straw garland.

Wrap down the straw length to where the bundle starts to thin out.

Keep adding a pinch of straw at a time and secure it with the wire to the cane

Keep adding a pinch of straw at a time and secure it with the wire to the cane...

See that bit of straw going all free range out there at the top... oh yes... it is definitely part of the design. That really is the benefit of making the basket you want to design in yourself. You can pay attention to details from the straw up. To day in our email I talk a bit more about how I deal with flaws in my design... and how to make sure it looks deliberate and not unkept. If you are not yet signed up for the weekly notification (always on a Wednesday morning - Vancouver time) email that I send out the moment the new design is ready for you to view you can sign up below this post. Also I would love to hear form you if you have questions or comments... or say hi.
